Vacancy: Marine Workshop Technician (Mechanical)

The role
Are you interested in helping to shape the understanding of our oceans? Join our operations team and be part of the world’s most extensive and longest running survey of marine plankton (with a Guinness World Record)! The Continuous Plankton Recorder Survey has been operating since 1931 and the results from this survey have shaped our understanding of our oceans, such as climate change, fisheries, and the impact of microplastics. From its early focus in UK waters, the survey continues to grow and is now global, operating in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as the Arctic and other areas. From our base in Plymouth, the Survey works closely with the merchant shipping community, who tow Continuous Plankton Recorders (CPRs) on their monthly routes. The CPRs are set up and returned to our workshop in Plymouth. The operational team play a critical role in our work, setting up and maintaining our fleet of CPRs, and co-ordinating logistics around the world.
We are looking to recruit at least one Marine Survey Technician, who will play a vital role in ensuring the Survey continues in its objectives and its aim to continue expansion. The position will be based in Plymouth as part of the small team that maintains and oversees a network of volunteer merchant vessels across the world.
The work is primarily weekdays with office hours. You will need to be able to have the flexibility to work out of hours as required and in order to assist with port and ship visits the ability to travel both nationally and internationally will also be required from time to time.
We are seeking enthusiastic applicants with experience of mechanical assembly, with good hand skills and attention to detail.
The successful applicant will be given training in the maintenance and operation of towed mechanical sampling devices (Continuous Plankton Recorders, CPRs) and other associated and similar equipment.
Note. This role is currently based at the Wallsend Workshop in Plymouth PL4 0RW with travel regularly to Citadel Hill, Plymouth, PL1 2PB.
Salary and benefits
- Salary based on experience
- 30 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays (pro-rata)
- 3 Privilege Days given by the MBA (used during festive closure week)
- Pension scheme – the MBA will contribute 10% of basic salary into a defined contribution scheme with staff making a 3% minimum contribution. The MBA will match additional employee contributions up to an additional 5%.
